Ground Source Heat Pumps
Ground Source Heat Pumps
Ground Source Heat Pumps are an extremely efficient and green solution to heating your home and hot water. They are set to replace traditional boiler systems in the very near future.
“A Ground Source Heat Pump offers the greatest efficiency of any renewable heating solution.”
A ground source heat pump takes thermal energy from the ground or a water source, and then via a compression process (similar to that of a household refrigerator, but in reverse,) it turns that little bit of heat in the ground or water, into enough heat to run your domestic hot water and heating system. As water and ground temperatures are that much greater than air temperatures in winter, a ground source heat pump offers the greatest efficiency of any heating system.
A ground source heat pump still requires a limited electricity supply to operate. However it is still up to 4-5 times more efficient than any other traditional gas or electricity based heating system. (For every 1kW of electricity it consumes it can produce up to 4-5kW of heat.) A Ground Source Heat Pump does this whilst providing you with the same level of comfort and functionality, as a traditional boiler system.
“The lowest possible running costs and high Renewable Heat Incentive payments make a Ground Source heating system a potentially very lucrative, as well as green, investment.”
A Ground Source Heat Pump system is capable of effectively running your domestic central heating system, as well as heating your hot water. It can be used to provide all the heat you require to supply all your domestic hot water needs, and it can fully heat your home through central heating radiators, or via an under-floor heating system.
They operate in a user-friendly style with all the functionality of a traditional heating system (timers, thermostatic controls etc.) They can be connected to your existing central heating system. They can do all this whilst consuming very little electrical energy (typically 1/4 of the energy of a typical boiler). If you generate your own power, it means the system has the potential to be 100% renewable.
Heat Pumps are well established, with millions of homes globally now using this technology to heat their homes and hot water. As a result, this technology is now very advanced, and highly affordable. They are still coupled with government backed incentives (RHI), which will go a long way towards paying for the installation of a ground source heat pump system. In many instances the RHI payment will far exceed the installation cost.
A well-designed Heat Pump system is the only form of domestic space heating that can in fact be cheaper to run than a modern mains gas boiler. If you are off the mains gas grid and in a well-insulated home a Heat Pump should be your go-to heating solution. It is by far the cheapest means to heat your property.
Heat Pump Suitable Homes
In order to be the most effective and cost-efficient system, it is critical to have as well insulated a home as possible. That allows the Heat Pump to operate at as low a temperature as possible.
Underfloor heating is a real plus as its efficiency in heating means that it requires lower heat levels. However low temperature radiators can also work well, if they are suitably sized to deliver the required heat into the room.
A Heat Pump is the ideal choice if you are upgrading your existing boiler. A careful design a heat pump system will be by far the most efficient heating system choice, and it can easily be retrofitted to any existing heating system, by our skilled engineers.
System Design
The appropriate sizing of a Heat Pump system is critical to having a system that can output the heat you require, whilst minimizing your running costs.
“A well designed system is critical to ensure heating effectiveness and running cost efficiency.”
Our installers will undertake a full Heat Loss survey to determine the level of heat output required. This will be done for every room of your house, in order to size radiators or underfloor heating. This will determine how the system will perform, with your existing or planned heating system.
The heat pump flow temperature is determined, and the heat pump is sized accordingly. Our installers will the fully design your system to achieve the maximum cost and performance efficiency.
- The go-to choice for well insulated homes.
- Underfloor Heating is ideal.
- High output radiators for existing radiator systems.
- Can easily be retrofitted to your existing heating system.
- Large garden / ground space is required / access to a water source such as lake or river.
